This painting is dedicated to my beloved Gran—an extraordinary woman who nurtured both roses and my creativity in my early years. She was a talented artist herself, and although she never got to use her gift, she gave me my first “how to paint” art book. Her garden was always blooming with the most beautiful roses. I grew up in one of the chilliest corners of South Africa, where roses thrived. Dusky Rose captures that memory: the softness of a rose flourishing in the cold, the warmth of memory of a bygone era. The rose’s muted, dusky pink shade holds a deeply personal symbolism for me—nostalgia, strength, beauty, and a whisper from my childhood.
